| Synopsis: | Seretse & Ruth is the incredible true story of the romance between Seretse Khama, heir to the Bechuanaland Chieftainship, and Ruth Williams, a courageous young English woman. The story of their love and marriage is better than fiction, as they challenged some of the most powerful political forces of their day, and changed a nation. Seretse and Ruth fell in love in a time when Imperial Britain, and apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia stood against any inter-racial unions in their territory. Not only was this a forbidden match, but it also involved the son of chiefs, and the heir to the Bechuanaland throne. On top of the political opposition, Seretse and Ruth also endured rejection and abuse from both of their families. Throughout their courtship and subsequently, their marriage, family and governments forced the young couple to endure separation and exile. Their amazing love for one another overcame these obstacles and inspired thousands. With growing love and support from the people of Bechuanaland, and massive media support from the West, they were at last allowed to be together. Their courage in their love for one another was matched by their determination to oppose the injustices of apartheid and colonial rule in their nation, and Seretse formed the Bechuanaland Democratic Party, and became the first President of the independent Republic of Botswana, which until this day has been an oasis of racial harmony and prosperity in a continent torn by poverty and prejudice. |
